Fruit

Fran Woods

Galatians 5:22, 23

“But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

The presences of these fruits of the Spirit are evidence that the Holy Spirit has control in our lives. The more these fruits flourish and grow, the more the Holy Spirit has control of our lives.

These fruits are beautiful fruit - anything that the Holy Spirit produces in our lives is beautiful.

Fruit is the end result of growth and development. Grapes don’t suddenly appear as beautiful luscious fruit - they appear first as this tiny little bunch of green nubs and grow as green nubs into hard little marbles eventually becoming juicy and fat and attractive. It isn’t until the bunch of grapes is heavy, juicy, dusty purple that it is worth eating. The nubs have turned into something attractive and mouth-watering.

I guess this is similar to the fruits of the Spirit. The nubs appear when we surrender to Jesus (are born again). As we grow and develop in God then the fruit is also growing and developing. I don’t know what “hardship” grapes go through in the ripening process but I know that oranges (especially navels) need a frost at the right time to bring out the sweetness of the orange.
