Luke 17:1-2 “One day Jesus said to his disciples, “There will always be temptations to sin, but how terrible it will be for the person who does the tempting. It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck than to face the punishment in store for harming one of these little ones.””

The phrase “how terrible it will be for the person who does the tempting” jumped out at me this morning (20Aug03) and has been haunting me. I was struck by how much this applied to the spammers, to those propagating internet pornography, to those who were deliberating doing things and producing things to entrap others. The whole thing of “freedom of speech” or “artistic licence” are used to justify (and excuse) evil. No matter what rights we may have we do not have the right to cause others to stumble. This, to my way of thinking, would include doing anything which could potentially mean someone else is harmed. I guess this is a bit along the lines of what Paul talked about in regards not causing a brother to stumble because of eating meat offered to idols.

Why do pornographers do what they do? Why do spammers do what they do? What is their real motivation? Do they have a clue? Or, are their minds so deceived that they believe black is white and so have lost the ability to know what is right or what is wrong?

Jesus doesn’t say what is in store for the one who does the tempting but it has to be pretty bad given what Jesus said would be better to do.
